Claymation Camp

Welcome!

From films like "Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Kubo and the Two Strings" to shows like "Gumby" and "Wallace and Gromit", claymation has fascinated and delighted audiences for years. Film studios like Laika and Aardman have created incredible pieces of art using stop-motion animation, and now it's your turn! Join us as we learn how to create clay puppets, edit film, make our own sound effects, and so much more!

Meet your instructor

Cole Travis is a second year instructor at Camp Innovation and is passionate about education, art, and working with children. When he isn’t at Arizona Science Center, he’s normally cooking up a new recipe, playing music, or re-watching a Studio Ghibli film.

You can reach Mr. Travis at travisc@azscience.org with any and all questions you or your kids might have.

Day 1

Welcome to camp! Let's dive into the world of claymation and editing!

Day 2

Let's build some characters for your film and learn about armatures! What are those? You'll find out on Day 2!

Day 3

Do you like telling stories? Then you'll love the activities we have planned for you on Day 3.

Day 4

You'll want your film to sound good as well as look good, which is why Day 4 is all about working with audio and creating sound effects.

Day 5

It's time to show your classmates how incredible your film turned out and talk about special techniques you can experiment outside of camp!

This camp has many technical requirements and might be tricky for some campers. Feel free to reach out to your instructor over email at any time with any and all questions, or join our daily Zoom conference call from 5-5:30 PM.

What should I be ready to do every day?

Everyday you should be ready to learn, listen, share your work, and collaborate with others. We'll be working on our projects mainly outside of class, so the time we have together online will be a great opportunity for us to learn and work together.

What if I don't have the programs listed in the 'Supplies' section?

That's ok! Thankfully, most computers come with some sort of editing software. While our tutorial videos are based around 'Windows Video Editor' and 'iMovie', the general concepts covered in them can be applied to most other programs.

What if I don't have access to a computer?

That's OK too! There are great editing programs for tablets and smartphones that will work just as well. You and the instructor might need to work together to figure out your specific technological needs.

Do I really need all of the supplies listed?

You ask some really great questions! You will need everything listed under the "Required Supplies" section for each day. We suggest that you also get the few items listed under "Recommended Supplies" as well, but those are only to help benefit your experience.

What if I can't finish the final project?

The final assignment in this camp is an original short claymation/stop-motion film that you create on your own. Claymation and stop-motion are technical and time-consuming techniques, so please don't stress out if you don't finish your film in the week we have together.

More than anything, we hope to give you the tools you can use to continue creating outside of this camp. Please reach out to your instructor if you have any concerns or questions about your project.
